Rabat The kingdom's political and administrative capital with a prestigious past Capital of Morocco, Rabat is steeped in history where many traces of its past are still visible. The extraordinary fortifications stretching over several kilometers, from the medina (old town) to the kasbah in the Oudayas and the Chella necropolis lend it a special character. Salé‚ the neighboring town and formerly a corsair haunt located just across the Bou Regreg River, also claims its own particular share in Morocco's history.

Royal Palace : The enclosure of the palace is called Dar Al Makhzen and includes the royal residence, the Ahl Fez mosque, the royal college, numerous governmental buildings and a huge mechouar (court for royal functions and parades). The entire complex is surrounded by an immense fortified wall dating from times of the Almohads.

The Medina : Construction of the medina goes all the way back to the Almohads (12th century). It spreads out over some fifty hectares and centers around three main passageways, i.e., the streets of Sou‹qa, Souk esSebbat and the rue des Consuls, all bustling commercial areas.

Wall of the Andalusians: Built in the 17th century by the Andalusians or Muslim "moriscos" expelled from Spain. This wall surrounds the entire medina over several kilometers.

Oudaia Kasbah : Fortified wall dating from Almohad times, rising up to eight full meters and thickness of two and a half meters, it encloses one the of the city's oldest quarters. Inside, the Oudaya museum exhibits Moroccan art. The most picturesque part of this area is the Moorish caf‚ where one can marvel at the beauty of the panorama while sipping delicious Moroccan mint tea and munching succulent sweets.

Chellah : Chellah is an ancient Roman city. It was completed by Merinid Sultan Abou El Hassan in the 13th century. The necropolis with its rich vegetation is surrounded by fortified walls bearing witness to the splendor of Merinid art.
